Costumes 1

Faculty: Liz Prince

Practicum:Create a costume for the character of the Madwoman in Jean Giraudoux's play- The Madwoman of Chaillot.

Interpret this character costume on yourself using any materials available to you. Each week we focus on a different part of the Madwoman's costume that includes an1885 dress with a large bustle and train.

Costume should have an asymmetrical balance to help emphasize her off kilter personality.

Weekly progression of Madwoman costume design:

  1. Gather materials you would like to work with. Remember you are telling a story and your materials are the language you use to tell the story.

  2. Hat like Marie Antoinette.

  3. Bustle structure.

  4. Bustle cover and under skirt.

  5. Bodice.

  6. Accessories and embellishments: tassels, fringes, cords, rosettes, ruffles, lorgnette, cameo.

  7. Final gathering of class in completed costume.
